Fort Humboldt- These U.S. military soldiers at Fort Humboldt were supposed to protect indigenous people from the miners. They were often out-gunned and outnumbered, and often helped miners hunt down Native people rather than protect them. Fort Humboldt served as a prison for indigenous people, mostly Wiyot, that survived the massacres. These prisoners were often force-marched to distant locations in the state to clear room for settlers.

The book Genocide in Northwestern California by Jack Norton is an excellent resource on the topic of genocide in northern California and is highly recommended. A copy can be found at the ITEPP Resource Center at Humboldt State University.
