Fort Gaston- These indigenous women (tribes unknown) are waiting for food rations at Fort Gaston in Hoopa Valley sometime in the 1870s. It was safer for Native women to ask for food hand-outs from the forts, as all indigenous people traveling the trails in Humboldt County were shot on sight by the U.S. military at this time, regardless of gender.
