This pencil sketch was created by sixteen year-old , Josh Lewis; " I originate from Yurok and Tolowa culture which are very much alike. I grew up learning mostly Tolowa traditions because I live on the Smith River, Tolowa territory. I began drawing at a very young age...as I learned more about my culture, I drew more traditional things. In this art piece, I show how Indian people were destroyed both physically and culturally. The miner is pouring away the Indians and their cultures and trying to get to the gold. By panning, he gets rid of what he doesn't want and it washes away. He gets rid of the Indian, and whatever else is in the way, even if it means extermination. " Sketch: copy right Josh Lewis 1999 |
