Distinct Cultures
This website currently features information and photography featuring these northwestern tribes- Yurok, Wiyot, Hupa, Tolowa, and Karuk. This site does not represent any of these tribes. It is simply an attempt to provide primary source material and contemporary images to help educate about these cultures. Contact OV at ova@humboldt1.com. Prior to contact with non-Natives, people within these nations were separated by different languages and territorial boundaries. These boundaries were not often physically enforced. Due to the abundance of food and natural resources in the area, there was no need to go into another tribe's homeland. If a person from one tribe offended someone from another tribe, or if they took something from another tribe's homeland, payment in the form of dentilium shells often took care of the problem.
