Sources of Life- The Klamath River runs from Klamath Falls, Oregon, to the Pacific ocean close to the traditional village site named Requa, near the present day town of Klamath. In addition to being the main method of transportation for indigenous people, the rivers in this area supply them with several species of salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon. In the Yurok tribe there were laws that said a family could fish from a certain spot on the river only on a certain day. Other families used the spot on other days. If a family caught more fish than they needed they gave the extra fish away to people who needed food. Other tribes undoubtedly had similar laws to prevent over-fishing and provide food for all tribal members. Photo by Sandra Lowry, Copyright 1999.
