Gold Miners in the 1800s encountered indigenous economies and cultures with laws, languages and customs alien to their own in the Pacific Northwest. This house at the traditional Yurok village site named Pecwan is used in ceremonies which are often called the Jump Dance. The Jump Dance is a World Renewal Ceremony held every two years to heal the earth. This is a traditional-style sweat-house where tribal members still gather to cleanse themselves in order to participate in the ceremony. The house is made of redwood.
